You probably think this is true because most atheists you encounter are silent about it while a vocal minority are bitter about whatever religion they walked away from.

That's a physical impossibility. As in: the vast majority of atheists are physically unable to stop themselves from bragging about how they are atheists. I know because I'm a lapsed Atheist myself. I recognize the signaling they do. Its ever-present in almost everything they do and say.
Atheists signalling is just one subset of all midwit signalling.
TL;DR you may think you're silent about your atheism, but its easy to read the signals once you know they are there.
I'm constantly surrounded by Jesus Saves signs, there's christian iconography on every street corner, and somehow I'm the one that's vocal about my beliefs? Bullshit.

As an atheist, I'd never laugh at someone offering prayers. I may not believe in a higher power, but those who do? If they're praying to that power then they are doing something that they believe transcends conventional methods. That's a powerful statement.
