Police aren't autonomous, and they don't answer to Federal unless officially deputized as such.
It's the reason people with even half a brain blame city and state leaders, instead of Trump.
It's literally pointless for them to risk it when they know the local DA will simply drop the charges, and they'll be released immediately to do it again.
That pension is an accumulation of years of trying to help people by putting your life at risk.

As for their service history: I'm assuming the good karma accumulated over past years of selfless, heroic sacrifice will overflow, un-burn my looted store and un-break my bones? Cause if it won't I literally couldn't care less.
As it currently stands I get to choose between abandoning my livelihood, being assaulted by blackshirts who want my head, and being assaulted by blackshirts who punish me for not offering it on a silver platter.

Police don't prosecute. They press charges, then the DA either follows through, or drops. Typically after consulting with city officials.
Your problem isn't with the police, it's the ones controlling them.
