For instance, the number of married, successful family men who have mistresses with the partial or sometimes full knowledge of their wives.
My personal opinion on the matter is that as long as children have near constant, direct access to at least one biological parent, and there is not a wide open path for sexually transmitted diseases, then that structure, whatever it is, will probably function successfully.
Women have never faced an external evolutionary pressure that decimated their population prior to propogating the next generation. Men have since before we were even human.
The fact that generations of young men have gone off to kill each other for tens of thousands of years is the reason polygamy works. The species would be extinct if population groups didn't figure a way to work around the gender imbalance war and conflict causes.
I wouldn't even have been the least bit surprised if this were real. In fact, I have heard of similar things in real life.
