The Academy Awards are just a big racket anyway.

Movie is made
Members of the academy nominate movies they worked on.
Movie does better than it otherwise would because it's advertised as an Oscar nominee.
Members of the academy vote for movies they worked on
Movie wins the award
Movie receives a greater boost for being an Oscar winner
