Even as a leftist back in 2015 I thought /r/politics was garbage. The astroturfing and vote manipulation were pretty obvious back then, I assume it's a thousand times worse today.
Default subreddits have become 100% echo chambers, its scary to see a mob of fanatics chanting the same handful of opinions. That split thought of "jesus are these normal people and IM weird?"

I imagine a good number of them are. But some are actual people. They believe the stuff they're saying.
I like Tim Pool's video from last week with Brandon Straka, as Straka does a pretty good job showing how he believed the media stuff, he hated Trump, wanted to hate him, had all these reasons. The difficulty he faced internally by educating himself that forced him to change his mind... I don't think many of the typical, average lefties who listen to the MSM have that.
Even if for some reason, these people in /r/politic get lobotomy surgery, we wouldn't lose anyone important. I think they are that useless and quite frankly threat or nuisance to general public.
