Because they can't make characters that are more likeable, with real values anymore. The classics are all they have, and they have to pray they're being written by a decent writer.

It gets so bad, they've tried to pass embodiments of pure chaotic evil as "good and just people." And then make the old evils look like reasonable people unintentionally.
