This idea is similar to the Icarus satellite developed by the antagonist in the James Bond movie Die Another Day, which was supposed to deliver “light and warmth to the darkest parts of the world” and “grow crops the year round, bringing an end to hunger.”
Umm that's an interesting comparison because the satellite in the movie definitely didn't end up doing that.

All of Peter Thiel henchmen use LOTR names. I looked into the co founders, they are jews, of course, so its fair to assume they are in cohorts. Musk is also involved.

Earendil is an old Germanic name used by Tolkien, but point taken, they probably don't know it from that.
