Minimum a year in Canada. MINIMUM. They can easily extend that by pretending they were discriminated against (your honor, we were the victim of a hate crime!) or some BS like that.
And no, after they're kicked out (usually trashing the place on the way out), they don't have to pay for the year of rent they didn't pay for. Technically they do, but they just laugh at the judgment and ignore you.
If you squat at a bank or a big business (Wal-Mart, Blackrock, etc.) the police will remove you instantly. If you squat in the home of a peasant? Suddenly, the police turn into the Squatter Protection Force and will find any excuse to not help you, the owner, secure your rights. And if you should lose the property due to unpaid mortgage? The bank gets it, so it's a win/win for team Satan.

A lot of businesses sign agreements with the local police that gives the police authority to trespass people without the business requesting it. The business could be close and the cops could trespass you.
I lived with a guy who was in his early 50s over a decade ago and it took the landlord 8 months of him not paying rent (and stealing my rent money a few times) to get evicted.
