A long time ago, people observed that living near a swamp could cause you to get sick. At first this was attributed to "bad air", later formalized as "miasma". Then it was shown that mosquito bites caused sickness. Later, the microbes transmitted by the mosquito bites were identified.

At no point did this evolving explanation cause the underlying observation to disappear. Living near a swamp will still make you sick.
