Now imagine our congress were composed disproportionately of Japanese Americans constantly lobbying for increased foreign aid to Japan, while we struggle to maintain basic necessities, and they can afford universal healthcare and education on our dime. Oh, and there's a ton in our top military brass (very few enlisted however) who are constantly agitating to restart the Korean War.
Also, all the history books written and edited by a bunch of Tanakas and Suzukis say Pearl Harbor was self defense. And our kids are browbeaten from the very start of elementary school about how we're all perpetually guilty for the loss of civilians at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Also the Japanese largely are using that word for outsiders in their own society. Within Japan. There is no large enough populations of Japanese outside Japan where there is widespread use of the term to describe white people in America or Europe.
Wanna know why I don't have a problem with being called a gaijin?
Because the Japanese aren't responsible for pretty much everything wrong with society.
If Japanese leaders had been quoted repeatedly over decades talking about how they were going to destroy the US and sell it off...
If a Japanese PAC were able to oust any congressman or senator who dared to vote against sending them US tax dollars...
If our military were constantly bombing Japan's neighbors as Japan moved in to occupy their land...
If every member of our government were calling the Japanese people "God's Chosen People"...
If nearly the entire cabinet of every presidential administration stretching back decades were filled with Japanese dual citizens...
If Japanese people had a centuries- or even millennia-long history of having utter contempt for any host nation in which they lived...
Then I might be slightly bothered by the word gaijin.
