There's a concept in karate sparring called "mubobi" where judges will stop a match if one of the competitors isn't fighting back. The reason for this is that, for whatever reason, not fighting back seems to provoke more aggressive behaviour, to the point that the fighter committing mubobi almost always gets injured if the match is allowed to continue.
This is a valueable lesson on how humans work; it is always a better bet to fight than to let the other guy fight you.
