This reminds me of fouls in basketball. People think a basketball game was properly and fairly officiated if both teams have the same number of fouls and free throws at the end. But that's not how reality works. Fouls are supposed to result from bad behavior, and the behavior of two different teams isn't magically equal. Slower and older teams commit way more fouls on average.
A violent black felon gunned down by police because he was attacking them with a deadly weapon is not equivalent to a white teenager getting stabbed in the chest by a black teenager because the former told the latter to stop trespassing.
"Scoreboard morality" is how gangs operate. They got one of ours, so we deserve to take one of theirs. Order of events doesn't matter. Actual behavior doesn't matter. Everything is equivalent because the almighty blank slate says we're all the same.
