anubis was supposed to be the biggest and baddest of goa'uld, literally ascended... he was never really defeated, but other than him, the goa'uld were massively outclassed by the villains that would later be faced.
replicators were defeated, but they're a trope that could certainly re-emerge as other civilizations independently invent autonomous exploration
ori were the biggest baddest enemy ever, and yet they were defeated by daniel jackson and the ancients.
wraith were a side show, slightly more powerful than goa'uld, not as powerful as ori.
the biggest villains of SGA and SGU were their story's downfall... that it wasn't other species... simply that they were always fighting for survival with the city/ship. it'd be one thing if they were cast onto a planet's wilderness. but no one can relate to survival in a random super-ship. it's not even interesting. if SGA team wasn't fighting the city all the time, they easily could have obliterated the wraith.
SGU's visual style was really good, but the writing was bland. they focused much too hard on just baseline survival with the ship.
the direct-to-dvd situation really fucked them over. brad wright and rob cooper had season 11 already written, but scifi was rebranding to cheaper productions like fucking WWE wrestling. apple tried pick it up, but scifi wouldn't let them, and scifi demanded enforcement of the non-compete that wouldn't let them do it elsewhere. the only loophole was direct-to-dvd, and MGM still owned the underlying rights, so they pulled the trigger.
continuum was a weak wrap-up of baal and the time travel trope. ark of truth was supposed to be season 11, and they got stuck compacting it down into a single movie.
nothing they've talked about addresses any of it. like if they're trying to cater to new fans, why bring back the goa'uld at all, and unless somehow its the return of anubis or a bigger badder goa'uld, old fans won't care.
even then, it's dumb...
