His clothing near the wound site would be sticky with blood. If a man says he's been stabbed, it's really quite easy to check the veracity of the claim.
But they didn't bother.
The absolute, steelest of steel man position you could take here is that they were criminally negligent in their duties. They were not in a high stress "every second counts" fight or flight scenario. They had all the time in the world to verify if he'd been injured, and they didn't bother.
Also, woman cops were on the scene. You cannot trust 99% of woman cops to do their damn jobs.
