One of the things I noted on watching it, and remembering the hype during it's original run, was people's love of Fox Mulder. And the thing about Mulder is, he's kind of a dick. I think people soften him in their memories but he's a jerk. I find that a lot of beloved male characters from the past are pretty much jerks. I think it shows people want edgy male characters with some grit to them.
iirc they wanted to cast a huge-titty bimbo as Scully, but someone with a brain made the better choice. Reportedly Pamala Anderson was considered.
