Why even ask why? Demonstrate your grip. Preferably with one hand.
Asphyxiation induces feelings of euphoria in some people as the oxygen loss to their brain amplifies their existing emotive state. Many of those same people will grip their own neck, or block their air passage with a pillow, if it isn't facilitated by their partner. Air kink is one of the most common in the world.
Oh, and it's strongly associated with being submissive. Which is much more common in one half the demographics.
I just found out yesterday the husband of some girl I know died by asphyxiation because he tried choking himself for pleasure while alone and killed himself by accident.
