I’m putting money down that the developer did actually work with Dragon Baby and told them what he wanted directly. He trusted them and didn’t check the file deliveries so he just threw it into the code.

Yep, they 100% cozied up to the developer and lied to them to inject whatever they wanted and rewrite everything they could getting tacit approval over their bastardization.
