I don't think so. I believe the original was direct to anime. It was in the era where shows were mostly created to sell toys,
But Smith, I've gotta warn you. It's not an anime. "Gundam" is kind of like Final Fantasy. There's 50+ series, movies, and miniseries, but they're in a dozen different, completely isolated continuities. If you're looking for the classic/main continuity, you're going to want to focus on "Universal Century (UC)" stuff... which is still 20+ entries.
If you're looking for the thing that started it all in '79, the original 43 ep series or the three compilation movies.
Also the original continuity is kind of a fucking mess, and I don't recommend it outside of a handful of specific stories (08th MS Team). In the first twenty seconds they introduce the idea that half of humanity got wiped out in the opening stages of the war, but it's barely a background detail. How long ago did this war start for it to just be glossed over? Fifty years? A hundred? Two hundred?
Solid recommendation. That and 0080 would be mine. They're both self-contained, relatively grounded, and have some of the best characters and action sequences in the franchise.
Going to watch the anime. I assume it’s based on a Manga?

Wow. Thanks for the heads up.

Nope, it was just a few months ago.
Thanks for the info

That was actually the first anime/manga I ever got into. My brother had it. Been meaning to get into it again
