I've never played this game and never will, but it's worth pointing out the rarity of a live service title ending with offline compatibility.
Gacha is never going away but if developers were savvy, they'd commit to this up-front and it'd probably reduce psychological barriers towards whaling.
(It's not like mods don't exist for such popular games while they are active, so any IP theft factor isn't relevant anyway.)
Very wise move of the company. They get goodwill, they get good press coverage, they get a product that they can chuck up on their store and make some marginal sales in perpetuity, and they get safeguarded against any Stop Killing Games laws that could pass and impact their corporate future.

I really loved the original Utawarerumono game. Never got around to playing the second and third entries in the trilogy.
