I've seen some communities go voluntarily to invite-only mode without an official quarantine.
Which obviously accomplishes Reddit's goal of limiting their growth and making them practically invisible.
There's one that I check in on sometimes that I forget is actually in hiding. Then I run into the firewall unexpectedly if I try to peek in when not signed in.
