That’s what the word means now. Plato’s use of the term referred to a monoracial patriarchal timocracy—what the Founders created—and even in their time, ‘democracy’ had begun to mean ‘universal’ and so they explicitly made ‘democracy’ illegal and railed against it in their writings.

Exactly, a constitutional democratic republic is the best political system to have because it's not about universal suffrage or "everyone gets treated fairly", but it's about representative regional governance and the prioritisation of local municipality (in theory).
The problem is that, like any system, it has been subverted via the long march over the course of a century.
It required a lot more effort and time to subvert than simply positioning a stooge in power in a typical monarchical system; but admittedly it's also next to nigh impossible to recover once it's been corrupted from the inside out. Hence, the only solution is to start over.
