If Overwatch was announced with that little "the world needs more heroes!" trailer, but instead of Tracer, it was Roadhog, it would give a very different feel, perhaps to the point of damaging the brand before its release. Marketing 101: Give the people what they want, and then convince them that what you have fulfills that want.
If the game's trailer had a hot spandex-clad woman as the first image, the main thing burned into the minds of the viewers... It would not have fixed the fact the game wasn't fun in its release form, but it would have evaded a good chunk of the bad reception. They advertised the wrong character.
