Because they're demonically influenced. And they wouldn't have the foothold they do if people didn't stand up to them sooner and with less restraint.

I think this is all destined to happen to fulfill Bible prophecy. It has to get so bad on Earth that it becomes impossible for the Church to turn the tide. I think that's when Jesus will return.
