The best way to protect the fleet is to move it OUT of the Persian Gulf. They can still strike almost any target in Iran, but 90% of Iran's forces couldn't touch them. They're 'whitewater' and short range for the most part, concentrated in the Persian Gulf. Their ballistic missiles aren't accurate enough and would give enough warning to actually move out of the way (if they were in the Gulf of Oman).
So if the US fleet moves south-east? That's a warning of danger ahead!
