I used to think that fables and fairy tales were overexaggerated fantasy stories meant to keep children in line, I just couldn't muster enough suspension of disbelief to accept the premise that human beings can be this dumb and would let their hubris take over unless they are truly mentally ill. Only recently am I realizing the fantasy part was masking flavour to make the presentation of human nature digestable to young minds.
