In high school I took a class that covered Maslow's hierarchy of needs. I thought then "People without self-actualization must either be mentally retarded or reside in the most extreme fringes of third-world countries." It's sad to have learned that it's far more mainstream; perhaps billions of people will never achieve that or even the rungs beneath it.
