At least it was "just" a slap/shove.
Not a knife to the neck. Not doused and set on fire. Not murdered and raped. Not raped and murdered. Not jumped by a gang.
It's absolutely ridiculous all those are real things that keep happing though. Meanwhile they go after the people saying "nigger" or "fuck the Jews" harder than they go after these fuckers. It's a total joke. And we're still better off here in the US than almost anywhere else.

It's not basically assault, it is assault. I never said otherwise, just that it could have been a heck of a lot worse.
A white person doing anything to a nonwhite, even when it's justified, makes the news and inspires mass chimpouts.
The attack was battery, but probably not assault.
Assault is an act causing a reasonable person to feel a threat of violence, but if you don't see it coming there's no assault.
Being surrounded by the blacks after was assault, because being attacked already he had a reasonable expectation of more violence.
People mix up assault and battery so often that a lot of jurisdictions have just merged the two.
I don't know if that's funny or sad.
To be fair, "assault" in standard usage - as opposed to legal - is often a physical attack. That's all I meant, and probably all the comment I was responding to meant.
In common usage this is absolutely an assault.
