In the 80's I got criticized for mentioning part of African culture, eating bugs. Studies showed back then that "traditional" African diets got about 25% of their protein from bugs. That was racist.

The Heart Of Darkness has a scene where the Blacks on the boat are eating hippo meat. Then the meat rots but they keep it on the deck for days. They were eating the maggots although the book doesn't say so. It makes perfect sense to me: jungles are hell! Protein's hard to get.
