I don't think she realises but even as short as a century ago, being a Bachelor past a certain age would get you shunned from society. It was widely recognised that you weren't a serious Man if you were unmarried. Jobs went to "Stable reliable family men" Cities had bachelor quarters where all the unmarried men lived.

Of course there was also a steady supply of Marriageable Women at the time so a Man that chose not to marry was with good reason viewed with suspicion. Societal pressure against Bachelors is the traditional norm, not just from her but from Men as well. You don't want single Men sniffing around your Wife.
