Is Neutral a real thing? I know the nut jobs claim a non-binary exist, is that a form of neutral? Or are the developers trying to avoid controversy around the gender issue?

Its almost certainly them trying to play both sides. They are aware enough to know the Body Type meme is getting heat and will lose them a market, but not confident enough to actually take a stand on it and risk losing the other market by appearing to appeal to the "chuds."
Its similar to Lords of the Fallen waiting until it had already flopped to revert to Male/Female in a big show during a patch, just to try and ride the controversy to a few more sales.
