More that an agrarian nation is ideal.
Although it was a noble thought in the late 18th century, that concept would not have lasted, and the fledging USA would have been gobbled up by the Euro powers of the time. I do like Jefferson, but his concept of an 'Agrarian Nation' was a fantasy and typical dwelling on the past.
Can't act like a bronze age civilization in the steam age.
