Girls do form "relationships" in Japan (usually in all-girls' schools) but it's considered a childish phase that they're expected to outgrow and find husbands.
I'm old enough to remember when girls always came in pairs, they always had a "girlfriend" who they spent most of their time with. Men would use the terms 'best friend' or 'wingman' though loners were still fairly common among men, and rare among women.
In either case, platonic friendship is something that goes back as far as human history. It only had to become sexual when utterly depraved lunatics were running the asylum.
So like pillow friends in the wheel of time books that they grow out of. Although the show runner felt it was super important to include it in the show

As usual: women most effected.

Girls form “relationships” everywhere. it’s called “having friends”.
Not everything that happens in Japan has to be a fucking “Muh special culture” observation.

Not much different than prison gays in that context tbh.
