Also: In the same timespan (late 1800's to mid 1900's) roughly the same number of White children were taken from the UK and sent to Canada. They were orphans of roughly middle school age & they were placed with a family & forgotten forever. While most found loving homes, others faced what the Natives faced in the Residential Schools when things were bad, but nothing has been said or done to memorialize them afaik. Treated as slaves or sex toys, they too suffered & died.
But they were White (even the Irish are counted as White these days!) and no one in any government cares.
They also really bristle at the fact that some of those 'settlers' like my family who were part of the jakobite uprising had no choice but exile to the colonies as reprisal to their rebellion. No treaties or such were offered when they rose up to protect their culture and beliefs.
