I used a bunch of those "first month 1$" accounts to mess around with a bunch of games to see if I enjoyed them, bought the ones I really liked, and moved on from there. Exactly like I used to do with rentals back in the day.
People got really hung up on fluffing it up into something it wasn't, including Microsoft for marketing, but it was just a cheap rental service for gaming.
