British and English aren't the same thing. Not sure if it was intentional or not by OP.
Britain/British is a nation/nationality. English is a specific ethnicity.
You can be British and not English. If I become a citizen in Britain I'm British, but still an amerimutt mixed breed of Scottish, German, and Native American.
To be really anal Great Britain is the name of the Island. So if you're referring to anyone on the island they are British. Wales, Scotland, and England are three separate "nations" united into the larger political entity of Great Britain, along with Northern Ireland.
