Trump has always been hawkish with Russia. My theory on his recent full retard escalation is that he always wanted the war to continue but had to balance that desire with anti-war elements in his base. He did that by appearing open to Ukraine ceding territory. Now that Russia might just outright take it, he needs to move the goal posts to justify the forever war.
