There are a couple wrinkles: Lying to police is not a crime. Lying to federal agents IS a crime. I also believe they can force you to answer more than cops can.
Moreover, simply remaining silent is not enough. There are cases where the suspect is talking to cops, the cops reveal the evidence they have, the suspect shuts up. But then the cops argue the silence is an admission of guilt (because they were talking before), and this works.
You have to say, "I invoke my 5th amendment right to remain silent." THEN shut up. But you have to say that clearly and firmly before anything else.
Interrogation should be illegal entirely, everything gained is only gained due to being under duress and as such there's no reason it should be admissible in court if our laws were actually held up as they should be. The words of the accused shouldn't even be allowed to be used as evidence.
