This whole exchange pretty much sums up the conflict of interest between the realist and ideological sides of the establishment. Britain's Liberal Democrats are the ultimate idealists, so convinced of the moral rightness of liberal internationalism that they've never understood they're just the pawns of a much more cynical, corrupt, self-interested power group. Add to that their desperation as they realize that even most of their own population think they're wrong, and it's no surprise they're acting out like this.
