They just got better at hiding it, ironically because of Gamergate. Remember how openly smug they acted during gg? They thought labeling someone a "shitlord" and "neckbeard" was all they needed to unperson someone. Remember how activists like Big Red became laughing stocks?
When those labels became ineffective, they escalated: racist, sexist, transphobe, alt-right, nazi, fascist, etc. But the desired outcome remained the same. They want us gone. "No bad tactics, only bad targets".
They became better at obfuscating their intentions, they hide behing platitudes and slogans
Another thing about Kent State that people today don't know is that public opinion was highly in favor of the National Guard back then. Normal people have always fucking despised leftists but, because they're normal, tolerated them and tried to think well of them and accepted them as human beings.
There were also multiple bombings of the US Capitol in the 70s and 80s and people involved in them got away completely cleanly.
Hugely in favor. Remember that the Kent State shooting took place BEFORE the 1972. An election he won with one of the greatest electoral landslides in history, and that was AFTER Neil Young made the protest song "4 Dead In Ohio", which is still played to this day on classic rock stations, as if it had a major impact on the election. It did not.
That bombing happened in 1983 and was also totally ignored.
