You (and some others) may be onto something, but it's going to be nearly impossible to prove a connection to 'the powers that be'. Presently, I think some of the new attention is really coming from people who want to connect the shooter to Nick. See a couple of short tweet threads linked here and here. Though, to add to your argument, the New York Times put out an article about Nick on the 9th. https://archive.is/pJzGz Subtle as an elephant, as it may be.
