The popularity of a conspiracy theory is inversely proportional to its threat to the established order. The most implausible conspiracies are widely embraced while everyone has been conditioned to have a deep-seated irrational reaction to that which is a serious threat to the establishment. i mean, to a point... going on about how there must be an atmospheric balloon laser array (balloons because space is fake!) all around the flat disc that is the Earth to prevent brave explorers from reaching the truth about how the moon is actually a wheel of cheese full of water that could be turned into perpetual motion cars tomorrow if only Big Oil didn't set up those aforementioned lasers will be met with heavy ridicule, and it's not because it's actually somehow true.

There's a whole Mel Gibson movie about that from the 90s called Conspiracy Theory.

And one with Gene Hackman and Will Smith covering a similar idea. I think that one was called Enemy of the State.

A conspiracy theory being popular could mean that there's some truth to it.

It could also mean that people are fucking retarded, which anyone who works any kind of customer service job can attest is indisputably true.

Sure, a conspiracy theory being popular could mean that there's some truth to it, but ONLY if it's harmless to the world's power structure, else it would never have been allowed to reach that level of popularity.

The most successful psyops in the history are those which have conditioned almost everyone to reject any possibility of certain conspiracies no matter how much supporting evidence there may be.
