Good comparison but not perfect. The European peoples didn't choose this voluntarily. It was a combination of fear and violence. The threat of nuclear armageddon was the perfect tool to stop the majority from people questioning the current world order and the rest was done violently. Desegregation in the US was literally forced at gunpoint.
