This may be your underlying issue: you cannot tell a response TO something from an attack ON something. The IDF didn't roll tanks over the border, they didn't bomb civilians, they hit valid military (or terrorist) targets. Sounds pretty "proportional" to me.
Russia's current invasion is "proportional" is it? Did Ukraine cross the border, murder and kidnap 1000+ Russian citizens & refuse to release the hostages? Did they? What was the foundation for Russia's invasion again? Was Ukraine sending 1000+ rockets a year, for the past 17 years, into Russian cities?
