I'm pretty sure that PewDiePie and a host of other early 'Youtube stars' got their success because Youtube pushed them artificially, because it needed stars to promote the service. But currently, it has too many stars, so you're going to need to open your wallet and use cross-platform social media to advertise your stuff.
Yup, Pewdiepie's rise was extremely inorganic. Up to that point, the biggest gaming YouTuber was UberHaxorNova and you could get 10,000 views a video by playing anything you wanted, however you wanted. Post-Pewdiepie, no-one gave a shit about smaller gaming channels.
