Colbert used to be sane and stable enough that he ran a show for almost a decade as a parody of a Conservative, and did it with such sincerity and softness that almost no one was offended by it.
Whether TDS overtook his brain, or he simply reached the level of fame/power that he could finally be his own self, there is a marked difference between his old self and now. Even if just from a talent level.
I don't know, man. Perhaps he sold out for the new show. Perhaps he was always this way and the conservative parody made everyone see whatever they wanted to see in him. And perhaps... he's just an actor and it was the old writers who were the talent.
Whatever the reason, he was stable enough to not only successfully commit to the bit without making it a never ending "hurrr, I'm retarded" joke and also interact directly with major Conservative figures of the time. And at the very least it was funny without much in the way of direct preaching, the opposite of his current show.
