Having the US come in, in ANY shape or form and DIRECTLY challenge their authority is a loss for the UK establishment just in it happening in the first place.
It's not without precedent. The SPEECH Act was drafted and signed into law just to exempt Americans from Bongistan's retarded libel laws and their constant extradition requests.
