Oh yeah, I haven't watched it since I was a kid and actually had TV, but I fondly remember it as one of the funnier shows on. I'm just super confused about what the specific joke is that you were trying to explain. :p
Ah! No worry. I too "totally missed it" back then, even though as a VW fan (air cooled! Types 1, 2 & 3 owner!) I did wonder how that gutless Karman Ghia was making those sports-car noises.
Learning about it did make me think about the possibility of "subtle" jokes in Get Smart & there could be more. It was a very funny show.
Right! James Bond had these amazing, tricked-out cars. Maxwell? had gutless convertibles 😆 At least until he got that Opel. That had a serious engine in it.
