Honestly, I think something is replacing it, which is why they are fighting so hard to keep their power.
I think that we are on the way to replacing it, but I think there would be a power-vacuum if it fell.
Power vacuum for them. Every new empire doesn't need as many people, that happens a century later.
It's a power vacuum for all of us. We'll get caught in the fighting, just as the Iraqis did after the American invasion, or just like the Russians did during the oligarchic period after the fall of Communism.
What if we decide to let the oligarchs kill each other instead.
