A Netflix model for gaming was never a problem in and of itself, and it actually could have been a huge success. The problem was that the power went straight to their fucking heads as soon as they started implementing it. Not just Microsoft but the entire industry became obsessed with fucking the players out of pure greed, aggressive monetisation, going back and altering historical titles to remove “offensive” content, policing speech and banning accounts, injecting left wing politics into all their titles etc… Instead of just selling “fun” like they’d been doing for decades.
And perhaps worst of all the entire “you will own nothing and be happy” WEF model that drives all their decision making. We don’t “buy” their product, we simply rent a license to use it. But they get to tell us up front that the product will expire someday whenever they feel like it and there’s nothing we can do. We have no rights, it says so in their twelve thousand word licensing agreements we’re forced to accept if we wish to even install their shitty, unoptimised slopware crammed with DRM and the latest in spyware.
EXTREMELY shitty corporate behaviour, and extremely out of touch with their customer base. Just as bad (if not worse) than jaguar with their woke ad campaign or bud light and the Troon.
They got high on their own supply and thought they had the upper hand because all the legalese was in their favour, but it turns out you can’t trick and bully people into buying your shitty products forever. Eventually the audience loses interest and goes elsewhere.
The entire business model they were all banking on is tainted now and unappealing to the average player, and will remain so until they do something about their own shitty behaviour (which lets be honest they probably won’t)
