For something that generic, I wouldn't be surprised if the jokester didn't even know that the guy's mom was dead. It's pretty easy these days to accidentally "trigger" emotional responses from some people.
This mostly highlights a trend of increasingly sensitive athletes having emotional outbursts due to insults. The spectators may be getting worse in a degrading culture, but I also think the players would have already experienced some of this, having developed within it.
